The Dakota Inn Rathskeller

Description: From a reader in Detroit: ”Mr. Sheldon, You have a great idea, very positive and practical. I don’t know if these two Detroit restaurants fit the bill for you, but I hope you will have a look. Both are reasonably priced, very European, and a lot of fun to visit. The Rathskellar…located in a frightening part of town, but with secure parking. The contrast between the restaurant and the neighborhood is revealing. And the Cadieux Cafe….mussels, featherbowling, neighborhood feel.”

I’ve been to the Rathskellar with friends and family many times, and I love the place. It is the classic German establishment, but without the touristy feel. It abounds with intricate wood carving, dark paneling, and hunting trophies. There is a great old organ, and a worn Schnitzelbank poster. The menu is traditional and moderately priced, and the food is always good. Every summer there is a chili cook-off held under tents in the backyard, and it is great fun. The only drawback to the Rathskellar is its location, but security is good. The contrast between the vitality of this restaurant and what surrounds it is astonishing. It is worth going out of your way to experience.
